Aligning Decisions to Move Innovation Forward
Over the past year, I’ve been part of a life sciences community where innovation is in the dna. Being here has been inspiring, as the pursuit of social impact and innovation aligns closely with the work I care about. What has caught my attention and curiosity is how large-scale missions, whether driven by public institutions or companies, translate into everyday decisions. There is much complexity due to the many stakeholders involved—be it regulators, funders, industry partners, or others.
But let’s start with the bigger picture. What are those missions?
Life sciences sit at the forefront of some of society’s most complex challenges—ageing populations, chronic disease, environmental health, food systems, and the broader determinants of wellbeing. The field offers data, knowledge, and interventions as ways to improve people’s lives. The work that happens locally in a team, a lab, or a company is part of this larger system. Decisions made day-to-day ripple outward in ways that are truly significant for the society. Nothing exists in isolation. That interconnectedness is what I find most compelling and it keeps me curious to explore this further, as this might be relevant to those working with innovation that is about alignment and engagement.
From mission to practice
Any mission ultimately comes down to daily work, where aligning with stakeholders is a very important part. I remember a few years ago, when I worked on a Baltic Sea mission, I had onboarding conversations with industry representatives, public sector officials, civic society. What I understood, is that no matter how valuable the mission, everyone wants to understand how their work contributes to it, how it affects the industry, and what practical opportunities or risks it brings. Some of the questions needed to be answered and are universal when it comes to innovation:
Where does my individual or collective responsibility begin and end?
What does this mean for my role and the industry?
How will others—partners, funders, regulators—interpret the changes we are bringing to the field?
From that point on, I started to observe what works well in practice when it comes to onboarding and engaging others.
Purpose is a fundamental component of this process. As complexity increases, meaning can fragment, pften it happens subtly. And when meaning fragments, even solid work and well-intentioned decisions can slow down. Finding ways to onboard and engage others—whether around the societal relevance of their work or the meaningful change it brings to the sector—can help progress move more smoothly and save time and effort for everyone involved. Therefore, purpose reminders can become part of the regular rhythm of work—simple moments that reconnect teams aor stakeholders to the “why” behind their efforts.
Where shared understanding makes the difference
Shared understanding is the unseen glue that keeps complex work moving forward. Small, intentional steps of alignment can make a true difference.
When understanding is clarified rather than assumed, work tends to move with less friction and more confidence. In many large-scale innovation efforts, moving forward depends less on moments of discovery and more on sustained alignment across roles, interpretations, and institutions.
A practical first step is to explore key questions that help make both the work and its impact more visible:
What change does this solution bring to the sector?
Where in the system does that change happen, and who experiences it?
Who are the decision-makers, and what proof or confidence do they need to act?
Are there examples or case studies that can guide their decisions?
Once these questions are clear, it becomes easier to identify the right engagement methods—of which there are many. A few I have seen work well:
Brief alignment sessions with key stakeholders that evolve into regular check-ins. They create trust and long-term relationships.
Case studies that demonstrate how a solution brings change—be it to an industry process or someone’s life—so you don’t have to explain it repeatedly, and in a format where they can be easily accessed.
Data visualizations that illustrate how a solution affects change across the field, for example, showing how metrics changed due to the solution, enabling faster data access and improved decision efficiency.
These steps help translate knowledge and insights into clear and practical impact across systems and industries. They ensure work moves forward, aligned across teams, partners, and sectors.
Above all, they remind us that every contribution is part of a larger mission, rippling far beyond any one person or team.
